Ben has become a sought after radio host with over 17 years experience in the industry.
He was hand selected by Edge Radio in Hobart to front his own show after a successful run hosting the Elizabeth College Schoolies Hour program in 2004. He continued to host a light entertainment show under the name JAB Schoolies until 2006 when the show was changed into The Brink, a show that he would front on Edge Radio until 2015.
The Brink soon became a cult favourite in Hobart, and was selected by Edge Radio to be the station’s Friday morning breakfast show in 2008. In late 2013, the show was expanded and it became the full time breakfast show on the station between 2013 and 2015. Through the show Ben hosted over 1200 guests with an eclectic range of talents including British royalty, Australian Prime Ministers, Academy Award nominees, Olympic Gold Medalists and Grammy Award winners. Ben served an attitude that he could land any guest he wanted and quite often did. The show ended in 2015 before being re-branded in 2016 as a podcast.
Outside of The Brink, Ben also fronted Australia’s only Formula 1 radio show The F1 Show (later re-branded as The Qualifying Lap) in 2009 and continued hosting on air until 2015. Through this show Ben interviewed a variety of Formula 1 royalty, including Michael Schumacher, Sir Jackie Stewart, Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Murray Walker, Daniel Ricciardo, Mario Andretti and Alan Jones. The show was later continued on as a stand-alone podcast.
Other experience through Edge Radio included co-hosting the adults only show Sealed For Your Enjoyment in 2014, hosting the lunchtime show High Noon in 2017, being the live play-by-play commentator during the station’s live coverage of the 2014 KFC Big Bash cricket, serving as the play-by-play commentator for the Tasmanian Ice Hockey League between 2011 and 2017 as well as hosting live events and broadcasts at a variety of major Hobart events and serving as the station’s interviews coordinator between 2013 and 2015.
Between 2018 and 2020, Ben hosted his first full time radio show outside of Australia, with The Ben & Mal Variety Hour going to air weekly on Radio Southland in Invercargill, New Zealand. Together with his co-host Mallory Foster, the show was one of the few live programmes on the station and showcased a variety of segments and music garnered a strong local following. In 2020 it was syndicated into Hawke’s Bay on the North Island of the country.
Outside of these shows, Ben has worked on commercial stations 7HOFM and Sea FM (now Hit 100.9) in Hobart. He has also served as guest host on US breakfast radio on Ryan & Gretchen In The Morning on Q108 in Clarksville, Tennessee.
