Sport wrap: Bronzed boxers historic time in the Olympic ring

Australia’s record-breaking Boxing team leaves Paris with its most successful campaign in 64 years, bagging two bronze medals and a string of solid results.

Caitlin Parker created history as the first Australian woman to medal at the Olympics, making it all the way to the semi-finals in the women’s 75kg division, where she fell to Chinese boxer Li Qian and claimed the bronze medal.

Charlie Senior became the first Australian boxer to medal in the Featherweight division at the Olympics, with the back flipping 22-year-old winning bronze in the men’s 57kg division after losing in the semi-finals to Uzbek boxer Abdumalik Khalokov.

The only other boxer to progress past the opening round was new superstar Teremoana Teremoana, who became the first Australian Super Heavyweight boxer to win a bout at the Olympics when he knocked out Ukrainian Dmytro Lovchynski in the opening round of their 92kg+ preliminary round.

Teremoana then gave it his all in his quarter-final against reigning Olympic champion Bakhodir Jalolov from Uzbekistan, but was unable to win.

Australia’s nine other boxers all put in great fights in their preliminary round bouts, with Marissa Williamson (W 66kg), Monique Suraci (W 50kg), Tina Rahimi (W 57kg), Callum Peters (M 80kg), Tyla McDonald (W 60kg), Harry Garside (M 63.5kg), Tiana Echegaray (W 54kg), Shannan Davey (M 71kg) and Yusuf Chothia (M 51kg) all unable to progress into the quarter-finals.
