Sin City is the scene for Round 22 of the 2024 Formula One World Championship as the second-ever Las Vegas Grand Prix takes place around the Las Vegas Strip Circuit. Tune in on The Roar for live race coverage from the ground from 5pm (AEDT).
George Russell stormed to pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in his Mercedes ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and the surprise packet of Pierre Gasly for Alpine.
However, all eyes will be on championship rivals Max Verstappen for Red Bull and Lando Norris for McLaren, with the pair starting next to each other on the third row of the grid in fifth and sixth respectively.
If Verstappen remains ahead of Norris in the race, he will be crowned 2024 World Champion.
Aussie Oscar Piastri will start in eighth place and will be hoping to make progress in the race to join his teammate Norris in earning as many points as possible to maintain McLaren’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship over Ferrari.
The Woking-based squad currently leads the Scuderia by 36 points, but both Ferrari cars start ahead of the McLaren drivers for the 50-lap race on Saturday night in Las Vegas, with Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc lining up fourth.
Cold conditions have met the drivers all week, with single-digit temperatures during each session so far.
However, temperatures are expected to warm up on race day with a forecast of 23 degrees during the day, and as high as 15 degrees for the race start at 10pm local time.
Pole sitter Russell told The Roar after qualifying that he doesn’t expect the warmer temperatures to change the performance of the cars too much during the race.
“I think it will only help the tyre grain, which we’re expecting to see on probably the medium tyre, but from probably like lap 15 or 20 onwards, it’s not going to make a big impact,” he said.
No matter what the temperature is when lights go out, the tradition of Las Vegas is set to be broken, with whatever happens definitely not staying in Vegas.

Good afternoon everyone, or should I say good evening from beautiful Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Grand Prix!
I am live from the media centre here in Las Vegas, having just returned from the paddock amongst all the glitz, glamour and bedlam that is this unique race!
It’s safe to say this race is an event, with more celebrities than you can poke a stick at. Alongside the celebrities, there are so many different things to entertain you as only Las Vegas can do.
But of course we’re not here for entertainment or celebrities, we’re here for a motor race. And a very significant one, as we could be about to witness history this evening as Max Verstappen aims to become only the sixth driver in history to win four World Championships.
Verstappen starts fifth on the grid, one spot ahead of his main title rival Lando Norris in sixth. If those positions remain that way, Verstappen will be World Champion.
Other ways Verstappen can secure the Championship tonight:
1st: He’s champion
1st + FL: He’s champion
2nd: Norris needs to win
2nd + FL: Norris needs to win
3rd: Norris needs 1st or 2nd

10th: Norris must be in top eight
10th + FL: Norris must be in top seven or 8th + FL
Doesn’t score: Norris must be in top eight or 9th + FL
Of course it’s not just the Drivers’ Championship still up for grabs, the Constructors is also still in play. McLaren currently lead Ferrari by 36 points. However, both Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc start ahead of both McLarens, giving them the upper hand this evening.
The grid for the race remains mostly the same since qualifying, with only Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Franco Colapinto changing positions after yesterday.
Bottas has dropped to the back of the grid after taking a five-place grid penalty for using an additional power unit, while Colapinto will start from the pit lane after his heavy crash in Q2 forced his Williams mechanics into car repairs overnight.
The Argentinian was medically cleared to race after his 50G crash.

George Russell is on pole after his incredible lap yesterday. It’s his fourh career pole and third of this season. Mercedes have been quick all weekend, topping every session so far. However, the Ferraris have shown strong race pace and were very quick here last year.
It’s another chilly night here in Vegas, although it’s by far the warmest night of the weekend. Currently it’s a balmy 16 degrees celcius, far warmer than the single digit air temperatures that have met the drivers each night this weekend.
On a side note, shout out to my man and regular F1 live blog author Jawad. He is soon to get married and is celebrating his bucks party today! What a special way to do it at the same time as the Vegas GP! Poignant! Congrats mate!
If you’re following along with this blog, let me know where you’re watching, and your predictions for the race!
TYRE CHOICES
Everyone is starting on mediums, with the exception Perez, Bottas and Colapinto on hards and Alonso starting on softs.
FORMATION LAP COMMENCES
Lights are on in Vegas (the racing ones at least)
AND WE ARE RACING!
Lap 1/50:
What a start by Charles Leclerc! From fourth to second as George Russell leads. Carlos Sainz drops to third, Pierre Gasly to fourth.
Max Verstappen remains ahead of Lando Norris. Liam Lawson meanwhile down the field forces his way past the Haas of Kevin Magnussen for 13th.

Lap 2/50:
An epic battle is happening down the field. Liam Laweson and Kevin Magnussen continue to battle as Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso join the fight.
Russell leads Leclerc by half a second as DRS is enabled.
Lap 3/50:
Verstappen is all over the back of Gasly for fourth.
Oscar Piastri meanwhile is struggling. He has lost a place to Nico Hulkenberg and has Lewis Hamilton all over him trying to pass him for ninth.
Lap 4/50:
Zhou Guanyu and Liam Lawson have been noted for leaving the track and gaining an advantage at turn 8.
Charles Leclerc meanwhile is gaining on George Russell for the lead. He is less than half a second behind the British driver now and just set the fastest lap.
Lap 5/50:
Both Ferrari drivers are being told to manage their tyres in turn 10 and 11 as Leclerc is all over the back of George Russell.
Max Verstappen meanwhile has passed Pierre Gasly for fourth.
No further investigation for the incident between Zhou and Lawson.
Lap 6/50:
Things have gotten worse for Oscar Piastri as he has been noted for a possible false start. That of course usually means a penalty is incoming.
Meanwhile his McLaren teammate Lando Norris is a second behind Pierre Gasly for fifth, but more importantly remains two spots behind Max Verstappen. If the race was to end right now, Verstappen would be World Champion.
George Russell has also just set the fastest lap.
Lap 7/50:
Leclerc has dropped back from Russell and now has his Ferrari teammate of Carlos Sainz all over his gearbox.
Norris is looking closer to Gasly now. The Brit needs to find a way past the Frenchman if he is to chase down Verstappen and remain in the hunt for the Championship.
Lap 8/50:
Fernando Alonso has pitted and is now on the hard tyres. He was the only driver to brave the softs at the start, a gamble which hasn’t seemed to have worked.
Russell now has a 2.2 second lead over Leclerc, who has a 0.6s lead over his teammate.
Piastri has gotten back past Hulkenberg, who was also passed by Hamilton, who is now all over the back of the Australian battling for 8th.
Lap 9/50:
Leclerc has lost pace. Teammate Sainz has gotten past him, and now Verstappen has overtaken him. The Ferrari driver has gone from second to fourth in one lap.
Lap 10/50:
TOP TEN:
1. Russell
2. Sainz
3. Verstappen
4. Leclerc
5. Norris
6. Gasly
7. Hamilton
8. Tsunoda
9. Piastri
10. Hulkenberg
Hamilton has gotten past both Piastri and Tsunoda in the last two laps.
Lap 11/50:
Leclerc and Norris both pit, dropping them both down to 16th and 17th respectively.
Piastri has received a 5 second penalty for his false start.
Meanwhile Verstappen has overatken Sainz for second. The Dutchman is on a charge and is loving life on these medium tyres. He is 7.7 seconds behind race leader Russell.
Lap 12/50:
Plenty of pit stops happening. Sainz and Piastri both have pitted, with many others down the field also coming in.
Hard tyres are the tyre of choice for the drivers pitting right now.
George Russell is doing a superb job at the front of the field meanwhile, extending his lead to 9 seconds over Max Verstappen and managing his tyres to perfection.
Lap 13/50:
Verstappen pits with a 2.2 second stop but has emerged in a gang of cars. Most importantly though, he has come out ahead of both Ferrari drivers and is in a net second. Amazing work by both Red Bull and the Dutchman.
Lap 14/50:
Race leader George Russell pits, handing the lead to his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who is yet to pit.
Nico Hulkenberg, another driver yet to pit, is in third, ahead of Sergio Perez, who also has yet to make a stop.
Kevin Magnussen has a train of cars behind him meanwhile, with both Ferrari drivers battling hard to get past him to try and remain close to Max Verstappen.
Lap 15/50:
Hamilton pits, handing the lead back to teammate George Russell. Russell leads Perez by 5.7 seconds. The Mexican driver still hasn’t pitted.
Lap 16/50:
Only Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen, Valtteri Bottas and Franco Colapinto have yet to pit.
George Russell leads by six seconds from Perez, who leads teammate Max Verstappen by less than 2 seconds.
Lap 17/50:
Pierre Gasly reporting he has no power. He has pitted and is out of the race after smoke started pouring from the back of his car. A real shame for the Frenchman who was the star of qualifying yesterday.
Sergio Perez meanwhile has let Max Verstappen through for second, and Lewis Hamilton has just set the fastest lap of the race.
Carlos Sainz has also gotten past Sergio Perez, and Lewis Hamilton has overtaken countryman Lando Norris.
Lap 18/50:
Perez is struggling for grip and finally pits. Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris all got past him on that lap.
Russell leads Verstappen by 10 seconds, who leads Perez by 2.2seconds.
Lando Norris is down in sixth, well behind where he needs to be to keep the Championship alive.
Lewis Hamilton is flying in fifth. Both Mercedes cars in strong form in Vegas tonight.
Lap 19/50:
Lewis Hamilton is all over the back of Charles Leclerc for fourth.
Carlos Sainz meanwhile is asking for a new plan from his team as things don’t seem to be going to plan for Ferrari. A possible switch to a two-stop strategy incoming?
Lap 20/50:
TOP TEN:
1. Russell
2. Verstappen
3. Sainz
4. Leclerc
5. Hamilton
6. Norris
7. Tsunoda
8. Piastri
9. Albon
10. Hulkenberg
Great drive so far from Alexander Albon, who is on for points for Williams tonight.
Lap 21/50:
Russell maintaing around a 10 second gap over Verstappen and looks very much in control of the race.
Hamilton still is all over Leclerc for fourth.
Lap 22/50:
CHAMPIONSHIP STATE OF PLAY:
If the race was to end right now, Verstappen would be on 411 points and Lando Norris on 339. That’s a gap of 72 points with 60 points available in the next two races, meaning Max Verstappen would be 2024 World Champion.
Lap 23/50:
Lando Norris reporting that his front right tyre could “go any lap”.
Charles Leclerc is still fighting hard to stay ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who once again sets the fastest lap of the race.

Lap 24/50:
Piastri is down in eighth and cannot find a way past Yuki Tsunoda ahead of him in seventh. A difficult race for the Aussie who has recovered well from his five second penalty for a false start.
In the lower part of the points Nico Hulkenberg has gotten past Alexander Albon for ninth.
Lap 25/50:
We’ve reached the halfway point of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. George Russell leads Max Verstappen by 10 seconds, with Carlos Sainz in third, 2.3 seconds behind Verstappen.
Charles Leclerc still remains ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with Lando Norris in sixth place.
Lap 26/50:
Keep an eye on Zhou Guanyu in 11th place. The Chinese driver is 3.3s behind the Williams of Alexander Albon, and most importantly 3.3s off a point. Should he manage to find a way in to 10th, it would be Sauber’s first point of 2024.
Lap 27/50:
Williams have told Alexander Albon to pit as he has a problem and needs to retire the car, moving Zhou into the points!
Oscar Piastri has pitted, dropping him to 14th.
Lap 28/50:
Carlos Sainz is asking to get off his tyres, with his teammate Charles Leclerc all over his gearbox. Lewis Hamilton is still all over the back of Leclerc, with all three cars within a second of each other.
There is a lot of debris on the track, with Williams reporting a plastic bag damaged the engine of Alexander Albon’s car.
Race leader George Russell has had a plastic bag stuck on his car for large portions of this race as well.
Lap 29/50:
Ferrari swap positions as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton pit. Verstappen emerges out on fifth and Hamilton in sixth.
Carlos Sainz looked like he crossed the pit line to make a stop before being asked to stay out. A possible penalty coming for the Ferrari driver after that late decision.
Lap 30/50:
TOP TEN:
1. Russell
2. Leclerc
3. Norris
4. Verstappen
5. Hamilton
6. Sainz
7. Tsunoda
8. Hulkenberg
9. Perez
10. Zhou
Replays show Carlos Sainz clearly entered the pits before crossing back over the pit line on to the circuit. An angry Sainz has berrated his team for changing their mind so late. A penalty will surely follow for the Spaniard.
He has pitted meanwhile, but further pain is to come.
Lap 31/50:
Hamilton still is flying out there and is catching Max Verstappen ahead of him for fourth.
Lando Norris is ahead of Verstappen right now in third, but is yet to make a second pit stop.
George Russell still comfortably leads the race by 16s from Charles Leclerc. Both drivers haven’t made a second pit stop either.
Lap 32/50:
Norris makes his second stop and comes back out in seventh.
Hamilton sets another fastest lap and is within DRS of Verstappen. Mercedes continue to show strong pace and could be on for a 1-2 here.
Lap 33/50:
Hamilton gets past Verstappen as Leclerc pits. It’s a Mercedes 1-2 right now here in Las Vegas!
Max Verstappen meanwhile has been told by Red Bull to not lose sight of the state of play, as the Dutchman still is set to win the World Championship despite that overtake.
There is still no word on a possible penalty for Carlos Sainz over that pit entry incident.
Lap 34/50:
Zhou Guanyu is still in the points, currently in ninth place. He is one spot ahead of the Alpine of Pierre Gasly, who is catching the Chinese driver, who himself is being caught by the RB of Liam Lawson.

Lap 35/50:
It wouldn’t be anything to do with F1 without me mentioning Lance Stroll. It’s been a difficult weekend for the Canadian who suffered a technical issue in qualifying and is currently struglling in 18th and last. However it’s a special shout out to him this weekend, who officially breaks Jacques Villeneuve’s record of 163 starts to become the most experienced Canadian F1 driver of all time.
Outside of that fun fact, George Russell still leads the race, 9.6s ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen is in third, 3.2s behind Hamilton.
Lap 36/50:
Another fastest lap for Hamilton who is slowly closing the gap to his teammate. The gap is now 9.1s. Will team orders come in to play if Hamilton is to catch Russell?
Lap 37/50:
Yet another fastest lap for Hamilton who is now 8.5s behind Russell. A real grandstand finish is on the cards here in Vegas.
Meanwhile a battle is emerging for the lower parts of the points, with Hulkenberg, Ocon, Alonso, Laweson, Magnussen and Perez all within four seconds of each other.
Lap 38/50:
CHAMPIONSHIP STATE OF PLAY:
With Verstappen in third and Norris in sixth, the Championship standings right now see Verstappen on 408 points and Norris on 339 points if the race was to end right now. With a 69 point advantage, that would make Verstappen World Champion.
Lap 39/50:
Sergio Perez has made an amazing move on both Kevin Magnussen and Liam Lawson, overtaking both cars in one corner. It’s a shame it was only for 12th place as the Mexican driver continues to struggle.
Hamilton has set another fastest lap, and is now within 7.6s behind Russell.
Lap 40/50:
TOP TEN:
1. Russell
2. Hamilton
3. Verstappen
4. Sainz
5. Leclerc
6. Norris
7. Piastri
8. Tsunoda
9. Hulkenberg
10. Alonso
Verstappen struggling for grip all of a sudden as Carlos Sainz is beginning to catch him. Will he fight hard for the podium or worry more about finishing ahead of Norris to keep the Championship?
Lap 41/50:
Perez overtakes Ocon for 11th. Tsunoda overtakes Hulkenberg for 8th. Some great overtaking happening once again here in Vegas.
Sainz meanwhile is nearly within DRS of Verstappen, who is dragging his teammate Leclerc with him for the ride.
Lap 42/50:
Leclerc sets the fastest lap of the race as both him and teammate Carlos Sainz put all the pressure on Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton is now within 6.1 seconds of George Russell.
Lap 43/50:
Sainz gets past Versatppen for third. Leclerc now is all over the back of the Red Bull.
Hamilton is now within 5.6 seconds of Russell with only seven laps remaining.
Lap 44/50:
CONSTRUCTORS' CHAMPIONSHIP STATE OF PLAY:
If the race was to end right now, Ferrari would close within 25 points of McLaren with two races remaining. Can Charles Leclerc find a way past Verstappen to close that gap even more?
Lap 45/50:
FIVE LAPS TO GO!
Mercedes have told Sky Sports that there are no team instructions for Hamilton to remain behind Russell should he catch him. He is now 5.1 seconds behind his teammate. Can he make up the time within the final laps?
Lap 46/50:
Nico Hulkenberg has gotten past Yuki Tsunoda for eighth, an important move in the battle for sixth place in the Championship between Haas, RB and Alpine.
Hamilton has set another fastest lap and is 4.9s behind Russell. The laps though do seem to be running out for Hamilton.
Verstappen is still keeping Leclerc behind him, and is only four laps away from being a four time World Champion.
Lap 47/50:
Russell has extended his lead to 5.3s after being told to pick up his pace.
Charles Leclerc meanwhile has finally found a way past Max Verstappen and moves up into fourth place. More key points for Ferrari in the Constructors Championship.
Lap 48/50:
Hamilton has had a small off but has recovered back on to the circuit. He is now 5.6s behind his teammate.
Leclerc is getting closer to his teammate ahead of him and sits 1.8s behind.
Lap 49/50:
Russell now a comfortable 6s clear of his teammate. Sainz also retains a 1.8s lead ahead of his teammate Leclerc.
Verstappen has fallen 1.5s back behind Leclerc, while Norris looks likely to pit to go for the fastest lap of the race as he has a big enough lead over teammate Oscar Piastri to return on track ahead of him.
Lap 50/50:
FINAL LAP!
Norris pits to go for the fastest lap on the last lap, while George Russell looks set to win his second race of 2024.
Max Verstappen meanwhile is one lap away from becoming a four time World Champion.
GEORGE RUSSELL WINS THE LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX AND MAX VERSTAPPEN IS 2024 WORLD CHAMPION!
A dominant drive by George Russell who takes his second win of the 2024 season, and hopefully he’ll be able to keep this one!
Max Verstappen finishes in fifth, one place ahead of Lando Norris which secures him his fourth World Championship!
Lewis Hamilton finishes second ahead of both Ferraris. Lando Norris finishes sixth and does set the fastest lap on the final lap. Oscar Piastri is seventh, Nico Hulkenberg eighth, Yuki Tsunoda ninth and Sergio Perez tenth.
I will have full results and quotes and reactions as well as a report to come! Right now I’m heading to the paddock to get said reactions! Thanks for joining me for this blog, stay tuned for more to come!
As I wait for Max to speak to the press, he shared a nice moment with Lando Norris in the TV pen. The two embraced in a hug and were smiling and laughing together as Lando offered his congratulations to the new World Champion. A nice moment between the pair after some of their intense battles on the track this season.

RACE REPORT
Max Verstappen has secured his fourth World Drivers Championship with a fifth place finish in Las Vegas, as the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton took a dominate 1-2 victory.
Verstappen, who only needed to finish ahead of title rival Lando Norris in Las Vegas to take the title, looked on for a podium finish for most of the race before eventually falling back to fifth, one spot ahead of Norris.
He becomes only the sixth driver in history to win four World Championships, joining Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in doing so.
The championship win has overshadowed the dominant Mercedes 1-2 under the sparkling lights of Las Vegas, with George Russell controlling the race from the beginning.
The British driver led from pole and was never challenged, winning by 7.3s from his teammate.
Hamilton was a man on a mission during the race, making his way from 10th on the grid to finish on the podium as he clearly showcased the pace Mercedes enjoyed all weekend in Nevada.
Ferrari will leave Las Vegas with a smile on their face despite not challenging for the win, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing in third and fourth to reduce the gap to McLaren at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.
Norris finished ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and set the fastest lap of the race on the final lap to get one point back for the team, who now only lead Ferrari by 24 points with two rounds remaining.
Nico Hulkenberg score four crucial points for Haas in their battle for sixth in the Constructors against RB and Alpine, finishing ahead of the RB of Yuki Tsunoda and the Red Bull of Sergio Perez to round out the points.

Max Verstappen is speaking to a packed press room here in Las Vegas right now.
I asked him his emotions crossing the line and winning his fourth World Championship, to which he described it as a “relief”.
More to come.
The top 3 press conference has finished at the dreary hour of 1.30am here in Las Vegas.
A clearly tired top 3 spoke on a variety of issues, with George Russell admitting he was tempted to jump into the fountain to celebrate his win at the Bellagio but didn’t want to get sick like he did after Las Vegas last year.
That about wraps up the coverage from the ground here in Vegas! I’ll have a few more articles to come over the coming days from my time here, including a great behind the scenes look at how the race is put together and my usual talking points article! Stay tune to The Roar in coming days for those! Thanks for joining me!
